11-Year-Old Boy, Who Allegedly Murdered His Dad Because He Took Away His Nintendo Switch, Makes First Court Appearance

Clayton, who had previously been denied bail on January 13, was handcuffed by police officers as he entered and exited the courtroom.

After the hearing, the young girl’s lawyer, Dave Wilson, told the local press that he had no comment on the case, but that his “goal” was to take his client to “juvenile court.” Clayton is currently being tried as an adult.

Clayton was charged with murder after shooting his father, Douglas Dietz, in the early morning hours of January 13. That day was Clayton’s 11th birthday.

The 11-year-old boy got angry at his stepfather when his Nintendo Switch was taken away from him and was told to go to bed, according to court documents reviewed by PEOPLE.

Clayton then found the key to a safe in his father’s drawer and unlocked the safe in hopes of finding the video game console, only to find a gun. He then allegedly shot at his father, according to an affidavit obtained. WGAL8.

When police asked the 11-year-old what he thought would happen when he pulled the trigger, Clayton said he was “crazy” and “didn’t think about it,” according to an affidavit obtained by the news outlet.

Douglas’ wife, Jillian Dietz, told police that she and her husband sang happy birthday to their son just before going to bed, and then she too was awakened by loud gunshots. ABC 27 News.

She told police she saw Clayton in a closet, allegedly said, “He’s dead,” and ran downstairs yelling, “Daddy’s dead.”

Authorities said Douglas and Jillian adopted Clayton in 2018, according to WGAL 8.

No next court date has yet been scheduled for Clayton. His attorney told WGAL 8 he anticipates they will be back in court in May.
