Canavan calls for tariff-focused ‘manufacturing renaissance’

Tom McIlroy
New Nationals leader, Matt CanavanHe’s speaking at the National Press Club in Canberra today. He will outline what he calls the “Patriotic Agenda for Australia’s Economic Revival”.
The plan includes five focus areas, including Australia’s “manufacturing renaissance”.
Canavan says this will be achieved “through the protection of key industries against unfair competition” and calls for the use of all available tools, including the reintroduction of tariffs.
He says Australia’s border should be closed to “mass migration” and net-zero policies on carbon emissions should be scrapped by 2050, and calls for a new national work programme, the building of new cities and a new baby boom.
“I don’t agree with Donald Trump that ‘tariff’ is the nicest word in the English language, but it’s not a dirty word either,” Canavan will say.
“The tariff is just a tool, a tool we already use when implementing anti-dumping measures, albeit temporary.
“Other countries are trying to steal our jobs and industries. We must respond with a more permanent approach to protecting industries that are vital to our ability to dominate.”

Australia’s most decorated living soldier will appear in Sydney local court today.
Former SAS corporal and Victoria Cross recipient Ben Roberts-Smith He was arrested by Australian federal police on Tuesday. He is accused of unlawful killings during Australia’s military campaign in Afghanistan.
He was held overnight at Silverwater reformatory and was designated a high-profile prisoner, so he was assigned a single cell, although he was not technically in solitary confinement.
It is expected that the person will request bail at the hearing. Roberts-Smith has always denied any wrongdoing in Afghanistan.
The charges against Roberts-Smith, 47, follow a landmark civil verdict in 2023.
In this libel case, which Roberts-Smith personally initiated against the Sydney Morning Herald, The Age and Canberra Times, a federal court judge found a civil standard of material fact that the soldier was involved in four murders while serving in Afghanistan.
However, this defamation case has nothing to do with the criminal case. The standard of proof required for a criminal conviction (beyond reasonable doubt) is much higher than that needed in a civil case (balance of probabilities).
Those findings included the 2009 killing of a disabled man at a compound known as Whiskey 108 and the 2012 kicking of a handcuffed prisoner. Ali OcakOn the edge of a cliff in Darwan.
