100 community groups call on parliament to reject natural law reforms
Lisa Cox
More than 100 community groups have called on the federal parliament to reject the Albanian government’s bill to reform Australia’s natural laws.
One letterIt is expected to be delivered to the Minister of Environment Murray Watt Last night 130 organizations said proposed changes to national laws would roll back environmental protection and community rights and interests:
We are dismayed that the Albanian government is pushing for reform of the national environmental law that experts say will take us backwards on environmental protection, backwards on integrity, and backwards on community rights and interests.
Signatories include more than 60 regional conservation councils and environmental groups and 19 national organizations: 350.org Australia, Friends of the Earth Australia and Bushfire Survivors for Climate Action.
The groups are concerned about several aspects of the bills, including a new streamlined assessment process that reduces community consultation and speeds up approvals, a proposal to devolve approval powers under national laws to state and territory governments, and a new “pay to destroy” environmental offset scheme.
Georgina WoodsThe head of research and investigations at the Lock the Door Alliance said the reforms “deal a blow to already inadequate environmental protection measures and the public’s right to participate in decisions that affect us all”:
Kirsty Howey from Environment Center NT He said the government had promised laws to protect nature, but instead they had “accelerated destruction” and the law had locked regional communities on the front lines of the biodiversity and climate crises.
This is a message from the heart and soul of the environmental movement. Grassroots groups across the country are saying no to Labour’s betrayal of the law of nature.

This policy will reflect the two core principles and eight guiding principles distributed following yesterday’s marathon meeting.
The two key principles are to create a stable energy grid with affordable energy and to reduce emissions responsibly to ensure Australia “gets its fair share” in that order.
The eight guiding principles include: putting affordable energy first, technology neutrality, commitment to Paris (but without legal obligations or interim targets), social license requirements for electricity infrastructure, and the elimination of carbon taxes, tariffs and mandates such as national vehicle emissions standards.
Aurora lights up the night sky
Stargazers were in for a rare treat last night when the southern lights were visible across large parts of the Australian night sky.
A severe solar storm had paved the way for the spectacular display of the aurora australis, particularly in Victoria and as far north as the Blue Mountains, where it was visible above the Three Sisters near Katoomba.
The lights were also seen in New Zealand.
