Moira Deeming tops Victorian Liberal ticket

An outspoken state Liberal MP previously expelled from his party has made a shock comeback after winning a bitter civil war. AAP reports.

Moira Deeming He received approval to take the top spot on the party’s Victorian upper house ticket for the Western Metropolitan Region after other candidates withdrew from the race.

He had earlier dropped his candidacy because the party did not see him as a businessman and Indian community leader. Dinesh GurisettyHe garnered support from the moderate wing of the party.

But he was forced to step aside after it was revealed he had provided a character reference for a previously convicted child sex offender, triggering another primary contest.

The only remaining viable candidate for the position was Deeming.

On Sunday he thanked everyone who supported him, including the state’s Liberal leader Jess Wilson, and added that he looked forward to exposing “Labour’s callous betrayal of hard-working families” ahead of the November election:

Bowen won’t comment on Trump’s Iran tirade but agrees Strait of Hormuz needs to be reopened

Chris BowenMinister of Climate Change and Energy says he will not comment on US president Donald Trump’s Social media posts loaded with profanities, however, stated that Australia also wanted the Strait of Hormuz reopened.

Bowen was asked about Trump’s comments, in which he called for Iran to allow ships to pass through the strait and threatened further attacks on Iranian infrastructure. Bowen told RN Breakfast this morning:

double quotesI haven’t made it a habit to comment on every comment President Trump makes on social media in the last 10 years, and I don’t plan on starting now because we all keep ourselves too busy. We want the Strait of Hormuz to be opened.

Asked whether this level of harsh response from Trump warranted comment from the Australian government, Bowen added:

double quotesWe are not participants in this war. We did not agree with the decision to start the war, but like many like-minded countries we call for the war to end in the interest of the people of the Middle East, but also in the interest of the world economy.
