Murray Watt says ‘humanity must do our best’ to save the Great Barrier Reef
Graham Readfearn
Federal Minister of the Environment, Murray WattHe will give a speech later today to set out Australia’s credentials in protecting the Great Barrier Reef ahead of a World Heritage Committee meeting in July.
Watt says global warming remains the most significant threat to reefs, with impacts from severe weather events, fishing, coral-eating starfish outbreaks and poor water quality from the clearing of land-based vegetation. At an event hosted by the Great Barrier Reef Foundation, Watt will say:
Faced with these challenges, humanity must be at its best. That’s why we’re starting the fight to protect the Great Barrier Reef for future generations.
Watt will also mark reforms to national environmental laws passed last year that strengthened the approvals needed to clear vegetation within 50 meters of waterways in reef catchments.
Successive governments had to repeatedly lobby Unesco experts for years to prevent the 21-nation committee from listing the reef as “in danger”.
last year The committee asked the government to submit a progress report in South Korea until February 1 ahead of this year’s meeting.
Unlike previous years such as 2023 Last year the committee did not specifically mention He said the reef would be placed on the “endangered” list at the next meeting.
Taylor and Canavan want more fuel storage capacity

Tom McIlroy
opposition leader, Angus TaylorHe says the coalition government will double Australia’s fuel reserves for at least 60 days and spend $800 million to build a new storage facility.
Announcing a new policy with the national leader, Matt CanavanTaylor said the Albanian government should remove underlying stocks from January 1 next year to get Australia closer to the 90-day minimum reserves required by the International Energy Agency.
Taylor said:
This is a plan that the Prime Minister must implement today. No excuses, no delays. If the fuel stops, so does Australia. It’s that simple. Trucks are not moving, supermarkets are not stocking, businesses are closing their doors.
We put forward a practical plan to make sure this never happens. More fuel reserves, more warehouses and a country that can stand on its own feet.
The coalition says its plans would mean Australia could reach 60 days of supply by the end of this decade.
When Labor proposed a 90-day fuel reserve before the 2019 election, then Energy Secretary Taylor said the plan would cost “tens of billions of dollars” and called on Labor to explain how it would be funded.
RSL Australia to review welcome policies

Krishani Dhanji
The RSL has announced it will review its guidance on welcoming country addresses at Anzac Day ceremonies after Indigenous leaders were booed at three dawn ceremonies on Saturday.
RSL national president, Peter Tinley He told the ABC on Monday that the body would review its policies on commemorations organized by the RSL and “provide guidance to our branches on how they can deal with this matter”.
Tinley said he was appalled by the booing during the dawn ceremonies, but added that some of the “lethargic thank yous” could have been “overworked.”
It can be overworked…then the question arises of how to review this process and make it more relevant.
I think there is a real opportunity for the RSL to pioneer and provide better expression in a way that is more relevant and appropriate to the current day of remembrance.
Tinley said it’s “a good thing” that the rules and service are dynamic and reflective of the community.
