The Greens have argued that Labour’s proposed reforms to the National Disability Insurance Scheme are “destroying” the people the scheme is designed to protect.
Greens senator Nick McKim “We are absolutely determined to fight against this bill with every tool in our toolbox,” he told the ABC’s 7:30 program on Tuesday night.
The Greens secured an eight-week delay in passing the NDIS reforms in exchange for their support for shifting the Labor government’s core budget tax reforms into negative gear and introducing capital gains tax relief.
McKim said his party would continue to oppose NDIS reforms: “We want to see this bill repealed.”
“We delayed this for eight weeks and made some changes that would remove some of the worst elements of this bill.
“Once this eight-week period is over, if we need another investigation or further delay, we will take action to do so.”
McKim said Labor’s changes would harm people currently supported by the NDIS: “Withdrawing desperately needed supports that enable Australians with disabilities to live more dignified lives and providing respite and relief to families who work so hard to support disabled family members.”
Prime Minister says new war memorial gallery will ‘keep the flame of memory alive’
A major new gallery at the Australian War Memorial will keep the “fire of memory” burning for generations to come, the prime minister said at the opening ceremony in Canberra last night, Australia’s Associated Press reported.
Anthony Albanese He was among those present last night at the opening of the memorial’s courtyard and Anzac Hall, a gallery focusing on Australia’s commitments to the Middle East, Afghanistan and peacekeeping operations.
retired chief of the defense forces, David Johnstonand the next leader of the Australian military, the current navy chief, Mark HammondHe was among other dignitaries.
Albanese told those gathered that they were bound together by the power of “let’s not forget”.
Those simplest sentences that live within us like a heartbeat; We vow to keep the flame of memories so bright that its shine reaches future generations.
Today we adjourned parliament for all who wish to celebrate the opening of this Atrium and Anzac Hall, which have been added to the Australian War Memorial and keep that flame burning even brighter.
What a sublime and powerful contribution this is. A bold vision has now become a reality that strengthens the institution of which it is a part.
The Prime Minister implored attendees to “read all the words” about those who went before them.
Look at the faces and get lost in the smiles, hope and friendship; the counterpoint to the brutal, inhumane arithmetic of war. These are its real costs.
But in the midst of this loss and sacrifice, what beats so strongly is life and an abiding sense of what is worth fighting for.
