Australia to boost navy firepower with Japanese design

5 August 2025 12:53 | News

Australia will buy more than him to support his navy, as he develops a war fleet to reflect the firepower depths of the Pacific.

Mitsubishi Heavy Industries’s Mogami class frigate has submarine war and air defense capabilities, including 32 vertical launch missiles to fire long -range missiles.

When the upgraded Mogami ship is compared to Anzac’s 6000 miles (11,000km), it will be able to carry 128 air defense missiles with the existing Anzac class frigates and will have 10,000 sea miles (18.500km) of 18.500km.

Ships can also be a crew by the 90 seafarers, which are significantly less than 170 required to run the Anzac class.

“A much larger ship that can operate with a much smaller crew and reflects how this ship is modern,” Defense Minister Richard Marles said to journalists in Canberra on Tuesday.

The Minister beat the German Meko class frigate to become the biggest defense industry agreement between Japan and Australia.

Recommendations from the Ministry of Defense suggested the Japanese design due to cost, ability and construction program.

“Mogami was definitely the best ship and all the recommendations we received, Mar says Marles.

The Japanese ship has a 40 -year life, and both can be used at sea for 300 days a year, which performs better than Meko.

Mogami was defined more compatible with Australia, as it uses a US weapon system that is already compatible with missiles in the Navy’s arsenal.

Three frigates will be built in Japan, the first person comes to Australia in 2029 before entering service in 2030.

The remaining two will be delivered until 2034.

It is part of the last eight people to be built in the Henderson region of Western Australia and 11 Frigat fleet.

Uz We want to do this as soon as possible, and we see that after the third ship, Mar Marles said.

“We are sure that the Henderson defense zone is ready, but it will be ready.”

Defense Industry Minister Pat Conroy said the frigates will use the Japanese design with limited changes to facilitate a faster transfer and reduce any cost explosion through privatization.

The accelerated timeline means that Australia can lift the aging Anzac class fleet earlierly and increase the firepower with more reliable ships.

“This is a lesson that we have learned from previous purchases and has a talent.”

Marine expert Jennifer Parker said Mogami is a talented and modern warship and Japan’s industrial base has a good production rate.

However, Japan’s first risk of exporting such a large ship should not be underestimated, he warned, the advanced ship is not yet in production, he said.

“We must ensure that our eyes are open to risks and we have mitigation,” he said.

“Previously, coastal security ships exported, but this is another level, so we need to take more attention to them in the construction of ships.”

The final price was not announced when entering the contract negotiations of the Nations Community, but $ 10 billion for the project in the next decade.

A contract that summarizes certain timeline and costs will be ink in 2026.

However, $ 10 billion is not only for the purchase of three ships.

Part of the money will go to scaling the Australian industry and the components that can be used when they remove the production line in future frigates.

Following a defense examination, which proposes to focus on the focus of the navy on firepower and long -range strike ability, the government is $ 55 billion allocated by the government to raise Australia’s war fleet in the next decade.
