A nine-year-old Australian girl has been killed and two family members injured after she was reportedly shot by police in Pakistan.

According to Pakistan’s English-language news outlet Dawn, the family was visiting a relative in Chakwal in Punjab province when they were robbed in their rental car on Wednesday night local time. reported.

Two robbers on a motorcycle, one armed with a gun, fled when they were spotted by a police officer, and the rental car drove away.

“When the police saw the vehicle immediately driving away, they thought it belonged to the robbers and opened fire indiscriminately on the vehicle,” a police official told local media.

While the family, who came from Perth’s Kewdale suburb, was taken to hospital, it was announced that the girl died.

While his father and older brother were seriously injured, his mother escaped unhurt.

The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade has confirmed it is providing consular assistance to the family of a killed Australian and two injured Australians.

“We extend our deepest condolences to the family at this difficult time,” a ministry spokesman said in a statement.

Pakistan Western Australia Association general secretary Asim Chaudhry said the incident had affected the local community.

“This news is very shocking, especially the death of the nine-year-old boy,” he told Nine News.

“They just came from Hajj [to Mecca].”
