Australian state proposes ban on ISIS flags, ‘globalize intifada’ chants

The Australian state of New South Wales (NSW) is proposing to ban chants of the phrase “globalize the intifada”, which many see as an antisemitic call for violence against Jews.

This comes less than a week after a deadly mass shooting at Bondi Beach that left at least 15 people dead during Hanukkah celebrations.

“Hate speech or incitement to hatred has no place in our society,” Minns said in a statement Saturday, AP reported. he said.

“Terrible, recent events have shown that the slogan ‘globalize the intifada’ is hate speech and encourages violence in our society,” Minns told reporters. he said. “You’re doing a very risky business if you’re considering using that phrase.”

The proposed ban would also ban public displays of ISIS flags or extremist symbols. The crimes are punishable by up to two years in prison and can also include fines, according to the AP.

Australia was faced with increasing antisemitism before the attack on Bondi Beach, and a series of events took place after Hamas’ attacks on Israel on October 7.

Rabbi Eli Schlanger, a prominent member of the Jewish community killed in the Bondi Beach attack, wrote a letter to Albanese expressing his concerns about rising antisemitism. Schlanger begged the prime minister “not to betray” Jewish people.
