Gurgaon woman claims cab driver contacted her via UPI after she tipped him

A woman from Gurugram warned others on Reddit to be wary of taxi drivers after sharing a disturbing experience she had during a recent trip.

On the R/Gurgaon subreddit, the woman warned: “Girls, please think twice before being nice to taxi drivers!”

In her post, the woman said that she hired a taxi in Gurgaon and the driver was polite and professional.

“When the roads got stuck, he changed his route without any problems. I paid him on the app and on my way home, I thought I should tip him as he is a good service provider. So I sent 100 rupees to his number,” he said.

Although the driver returned the money shortly afterwards, he soon started sending her messages on WhatsApp.

“I immediately blocked his number (he had taken my number from my Paytm UPI ID, I have changed it now). This guy was not young. He was middle-aged. Even after I blocked him, he tried to contact me on Paytm, so I blocked him there and filed a complaint on the app,” she said. He further explained that the incident worried him as he dropped it off near his home.

The user explained that he and his friend did not speak to the driver during the trip. “It’s scary because he knows where I live,” he added. He asked others for advice, asking them to call the police or speak to him through an intermediary.

The comments section of her post was filled with expressions of concern and similar experiences. One user wrote: “Hope you’re safe now. Don’t worry, keep your house locked and safe.”

Another said, “This happens to me too! It’s been happening more often since I moved to Gurgaon.” he said.

One user said, “Buy your own car right now if possible. I have trusted these apps for about three years, but not anymore. As a woman, I find this concept unsafe.”

Many people have debated how much personal information taxi drivers have access to during transactions and whether ride-hailing and payment apps are doing enough to protect users, especially women, from harassment.
