Australia’s drowning death toll highest since records began three decades ago | Australia news

The swimming skills of Australians warn at crisis levels, because life -saving organizations warn, because in a new report, 357 people show that the last financial year drowned.

The annual drowning report published by Australia and Surf Life Savings Australia on Tuesday, 1 July 2024 and 30 June 2025-34% of the previous year increased by 34% more than 323.

In the report, one -third of the drowning was over 65 years of age, and drowning deaths between those who are 75 years and older increased by 63% in a 10 -year average.

Justin Scarr, General Manager of Australia, Royal Life, said that these increases are at least partially the result of population aging, and that he did not recognize or accept how age and some health conditions or drugs can affect swimming skills.

“Elderly people, especially men, exaggerate their abilities, SC said Scarr. “They cannot realize that their skills are in a decline, and they may not be completely aware that the drug they receive may cause loss of consciousness or other symptoms that make it very difficult to swim in the light of security.”

The report expressed concerns that Australians may have the lowest swimming skills of Australians since the widespread adoption of school -based swimming programs in the 1970s.

General Manager Adam Weir said that the coastal drowning, which constitutes 43% of the national total, is a special concern for Australia, which saved Surf Life.

“Rip currents continue to be the number one coastal danger of Australia, more than one of the drowned deaths – more than one of the drowned deaths – sharks, floods or cyclones more than the use of the beach while the use of the beach continues to grow and people discover a wider coastal places more than the surfing lifeguards and lifeguards.”

The new Southern Wales had the most suffocation death in 129, followed by Queensland in 90. However, the drowning rate was the highest in Western Australia with 100,000 people and 49 deaths with 1.65 drowning; And the lowest in Victoria, 0.75 or 52 deaths per 100,000 people.

32% of the known people (53%) were born abroad.

The deaths of children under five years of age remained low against the 10 -year average attributed to decades of work, including pool fence legislation and raise increasing. The deaths of children between the ages of five to 14 were 3% of all drowning, but deaths between 15 and 24 years of age were four times to four times.

“Parents sign up [their kids to swimming lessons] They hang out there at six months and as long as possible. However, the research shows that children have left lessons between the ages of six and seven and have never returned. ”

Irregular access to cost burden and courses and safe swimming places, as well as other factors, meant that approximately half of the children could not swim. If Scarr left high school without these skills, he was under significant risk of drowning.

“Swimming training should be wet at a wet. We cannot do this problem by replacing all swimming training with a brochure or an online program.”

Those in disadvantaged areas drowned at higher rates than more advantageous areas per population, and children under the age of 14 are particularly vulnerable.

“We need children in the pools and we need children who learn to swim and swim long distances and life -saving strokes. And we have to prepare older children to prepare for exposure to water away from their parents and probably prepare them in unlimited, inanimate areas.”
