Watch: Sam Kerr’s goal
Van Egmond gifted the ball to the Philippines
Emily Van Egmond is having a difficult start to the match. He headed the ball over the goal when he was right in front of him and then tried the back heel but gave the ball back to the Philippines.
But the situation is even worse for Wheeler, who gets kicked in the shin. Ah.

History begins to repeat itself as Foord and Kerr reunite
This is a good start for the Philippines, who really frustrated themselves by disrupting Australia’s efforts to find a rhythm. The Matildas manage a nice build-up game heading into the first corner of the game, but their opponents don’t look keen on repeating the 8-0 result at the end of 2023.
A classic poacher goal from Sam Kerr and of course an assist from attacking partner Caitlin Foord to kick off Australia’s campaign. Kerr is back and there will be more to come in this game. In the last match of these teams, he and Foord scored hat-tricks.
Sam Kerr scores!
Sam Kerr opens the scoring for the Matildas at Perth Stadium and their fans love it.
The goal will be Kerr’s, but Clare Wheeler should take some of the credit for a fine strike on Foord’s head. Kerr finds the back of the net. Australia scored their first goal of the tournament.

Loud for Lincoln
Chloe Lincoln calmly catches the ball and is greeted with thunderous applause from the sold-out crowd at Perth Stadium.
At the other end, A-League Women’s veteran Angie Beard makes a crucial block for the Philippines as the ball passes from one Matilda to another inside the box. Carpenter keeps the ball alive.

Philippines ready to get angry
Philippines coach Mark Torcaso said his job was to frustrate and disturb the Matildas in this match. They’re doing a good job so far, just disrupting the Matildas rhythm.
Catley is not happy to have her shirt tugged and as a result the Matildas get the ball.
Australia 0-0 Philippines, 12 minutes
friendly fire
Play was paused after Ellie Carpenter and Hayley Raso accidentally collided with moderate force. It’s not entirely clear who was looking where, but the impact was so violent that Raso stopped moving with his hands on his knees.
Australia 0-0 Philippines, 10 minutes
Catley’s left boot is back
It’s a pleasure to see Caitlin Foord and Sam Kerr on the same side again. They are both trying to get the Philippines’ box.
It’s a real pleasure to watch Steph Catley send the ball from the corner with her left foot. It really is just like old times. If these three keep it up we should see something on the leaderboard soon.
Australia 0-0 Philippines, 6 minutes
Rookie goalkeeper enjoying the match for the first time
Chloe Lincoln made her fourth appearance for Australia and made her first touch of the tournament as the team’s reserve goalkeeper.
It is up to the backline of Wini Heatley, Clare Hunt, Ellie Carpenter and Steph Catley to help her get a clean sheet.
Australia 0-0 Philippines, 4 minutes
Wow already down
The game stops for a moment and Joe Montemurro grimaces as Katrina Gorry falls to the ground clutching her ankle. After a while, he stands up and the game continues.
Montemurro would do his best to avoid any serious injuries in this tournament.
