President Donald Trump went on late-night host Stephen Colbert on Tuesday night and called him a “dead man walking” and urged CBS to “put him to sleep.”
In a late-night post by the president on Truth Social, he called “The Late Show” a “pathetic train wreck” that was “fueled by hate and smoke.”
“Stephen Colbert is a pathetic train wreck who needs no talent or anything for show business success. Now, after being laid off by CBS and hung out to dry, he’s gotten even worse, along with essentially non-existent ratings,” Trump wrote. “Stephen running on hate and smoke ~ A dead man walking! CBS should ‘put him to sleep’, NOW that’s the humane thing to do!”

CBS did not immediately respond to Fox News Digital’s request for comment.
Shortly after his direct message to Colbert and CBS, Trump issued a broader warning to the late-night shows, saying “President Donald J. Trump is almost 100% negative to MAGA and the Republican Party.”
“If Network NEWS BROADCASTS and Late Night Shows are almost 100% Unfavorable to President Donald J. Trump, MAGA, and the Republican Party, shouldn’t their precious Broadcast Licenses be terminated? I say YES!” Truth Social wrote on Wednesday.

CBS announced in July that it would cancel “The Late Show” and that Colbert’s final episode would air in May 2026. The channel said that this move was a purely financial decision.

After hearing the news that Colbert’s show was canceled, Trump went to Truth Social to celebrate and later in the night warned host Jimmy Kimmel that he was “next.”
“I absolutely love Colbert getting fired. His talent was even less than his ratings. I hear Jimmy Kimmel is next. He’s even less talented than Colbert!” Trump wrote in July.
Colbert is a harsh critic of Trump and devotes nearly nightly monologues to satirizing him and his supporters. Liberal and Democratic Party guests frequently join the program for friendly interviews.
