A New York police detective and four children were among those injured in separate shootings in Brooklyn over the violent July 4th holiday weekend.

NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch confirmed at a news conference hours later that Detective Robert Karroll of the New York Police Department’s Sex Offender Surveillance Unit was shot in the back of his ballistic vest during an encounter with an armed 18-year-old in Crown Heights on Sunday morning.

Karroll was taken to Kings County Hospital and is expected to make a full recovery. A second police officer suffered injuries to his face and shoulder during the incident.

Detectives Endowment Association President Scott Munro condemned the violence.

“This has to stop,” he said at a news conference Sunday morning. “Three weeks ago, a detective was shot at the same hospital. There’s a pause here. Our members are out there day and night, hour after hour, to protect the people of New York City, they’re doing a job they were sworn to do, and they should be respected, and thank God this detective is going home.”

He breathed a sigh of relief, saying that “we are not planning a funeral today.”

Tisch said officers assigned to the mobile field force team were near Nostrand Avenue and St. Louis around 4:14 a.m. ET when a person approached the vehicle. He said they parked in an unmarked police vehicle near John’s Place.

“Given the absence of a body-worn camera in this incident, the circumstances of the approach are still unclear,” Tisch said, adding that the attack occurred “quickly and unexpectedly.”

This attack came hours after at least eight people were shot and four children were injured in Coney Island.

The victims included two men, two women and four children, ages 14, 12, 7 and 6. They were all taken to hospitals. Police said seven people were in stable condition, while a 21-year-old woman was in critical condition.

In the officer shooting incident, Tisch said the officers exited the vehicle and attempted to engage the armed suspect before the three officers fired their weapons. He said the suspect was not shot. The police vehicle had ballistic damage, including bullet holes in the windshield and rear windows and on the passenger side.

After a foot chase, the suspect was captured several blocks away near Rogers Boulevard and Union Street. Tisch said he resisted arrest and refused to be handcuffed before officers turned on a stun gun and took him into custody. SAR 9mm firearm was seized.

“I am relieved that Officer Detective Robert Karroll was wearing a bulletproof vest and was not seriously injured as a result,” New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani said at the press conference, adding that “a husband and father of three children” survived.

Tisch said officers were reassigned to the area shortly before midnight as part of the department’s July 4 violence reduction plan that targets ongoing crew violence.

Investigators were searching nearby businesses for surveillance footage because there was no body camera video of the shooting.
