Award-winning curry house closes doors – serving locals for 35 years

An award-winning curry restaurant in London has closed after 35 years, leaving locals heartbroken. Whetstone’s Bayleaf Restaurant has won several awards, including best restaurant in North London at the Asian Restaurant and Takeaway Awards and Harden’s Certificate of Achievement for “very high quality” food.

But founder Tofozzul Miah said he made the difficult decision to close after 35 “unforgettable years” due to changing “food preferences” in the neighborhood. They will continue to offer takeout delivery service while the restaurant is closed.

Mr Miah said: “Dear Customers and Friends, After 35 unforgettable years on the High Road, it is with great sadness that we announce the closure of Bayleaf Restaurant.

“We are deeply grateful for the unwavering support you have shown us over the decades. It has been our privilege to serve our customers for three generations, creating lasting memories and culinary experiences.

“As Whitestone’s demographics have evolved, so have our community’s food preferences. While many establishments have moved away from serving real food, we remain committed to quality and tradition.

“Every moment spent serving the local community has been a joy and we will cherish the connections we have made with each of you.”

He also highlighted the challenges currently being felt in the industry.

He wrote: “While we recognize the challenges microbusinesses may face in the future, we remain hopeful about the resilience of our community. We express our gratitude to all of our customers, employees, and supporters over the years.”

Loyal customers were upset by the news, with one saying: “It was the best Indian when I lived in the area.” Another wrote: “What a loss to the industry and the whetstone.”

A third said: “The food and staff were amazing, such a shame there have been great meals and takeaways over the years.”
