Balcatta HAZMAT warning: Fire breaks out inside factory’s chemical lab as warning issued to public

Authorities have issued a danger warning after a fire in a metal factory’s chemical analysis laboratory caused potentially dangerous smoke in the suburb.

The fire broke out at the ALS Metallurgy plant in Perth’s northern suburb of Balcatta at around 9pm on Monday evening, prompting DFES to issue an alert urging locals to stay indoors, close their doors and windows and turn off their air conditioning.

Drivers were also asked to stay away from the area, reduce their speed and drive carefully.

While firefighters extinguished the fire, police said “it is not suspicious.”

The hazmat warning was still on the DFES website at 7.30am on Tuesday.
