A 29-year-old Hindu man was lynched by a mob in Bangladesh’s Rajbari district on Wednesday night following allegations of extortion. The victim, identified as Amrit Mondal (also known as Samrat), was reportedly captured by villagers who allegedly tried to demand money at gunpoint.
The incident took place around 11 pm in Hosendanga village in Pangsha upazila. According to local officials, Mondal was taken to a nearby hospital following the attack but was pronounced dead by medical personnel upon arrival at the scene.

According to Deputy Superintendent of Police (Pangsha Circle) Debrata Sarkar, Mondal and a group of his friends allegedly entered the house of a local villager, Shahidul Islam, to demand extortion money.
The situation worsened when Shahidul’s family raised an alarm and a large crowd of neighbors arrived at the scene. While Mondal’s friends managed to escape from the scene, Mondal was caught by the crowd. According to police reports, weapons were seized at the conflict site.
Criminal History and Gang Affiliations
Local residents and police officials told The Daily Star that Amrit Mondal was a “known criminal element” in the area.
Gang Leadership: Reports suggest that he leads a group under his own name that locals describe as a “terrorist organisation” involved in intimidation and criminal activities.
Legal Registration: Mondal had several cases pending against him at Pangsha Police Station, including at least one murder charge.
Recent Arrests: Following the lynching, police arrested one of Mondal’s associates, Muhammad Selim, and reportedly seized firearms from his possession.
Increasing Unrest and Targeted Killings
This lynching is part of a broader wave of violence currently sweeping Bangladesh.
Dipu Chandra Das Case: Last week, 27-year-old Dipu Chandra Das was killed by a mob; It was reported that his body was tied to a tree and set on fire.
Crude Bomb Attack: In a separate incident in Dhaka on Wednesday evening, a young man was killed after a crude bomb was thrown from a flyover while he was at a roadside tea stall.
Death of Student Leader: Unrest intensified after the murder of Osman Hadi, one of the prominent figures of the 2024 student protests, on December 18.
Government Response
The head of the interim government, Mohammed Younis, called for calm and ordered immediate action against those who took the law into their own hands. Authorities confirmed that at least 10 people have been arrested in connection with the murder of Osman Hadi, while investigations into the lynching of Amrit Mondal and Dipu Chandra Das are ongoing.
