While it’s a three-day weekend away for most Brits, some may have some free time to do some shopping. From updating your wardrobe to sprucing up your home, different stores will meet different needs.
However, on Monday 4 May 2026 the typical rules for shopping at popular high street chains such as B&M, Dunelm, Home Bargains and Primark will change. Unlike shops closing for part of Christmas or Easter, the bank holiday does not force any of these major stores to close on that day.
Instead, opening and closing times may vary depending on where in the country people live. People should double-check local stores to avoid falling into the trap of arriving too early or too late to shop.
B&M
B&M’s website has confirmed that stores will be open on Monday 4 May, but times may vary. For example, most stores will be open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Monday.

Unlike Easter Sunday, when Scottish shops are open and British shops are closed, for the May Bank Holiday Scotland generally operates the same reduced opening hours as the rest of the UK, although some branches may stay open slightly later.
B&M does not adhere to a standard set of opening hours across all its stores, so it is best for shoppers to check locally for details of their nearest B&M store.
Dunelm
Dunelm stores in the UK will also operate reduced hours due to the May Bank Holiday on Monday. Normally during the week Dunelm stores tend to stay open until 9pm, but public holidays see significant changes to both opening and closing times.
In England most shops will close early, in Wales and Northern Ireland shutters will close from 6pm, but it’s best to check online to see if local shops offer slightly different hours. Scottish shops generally stick to normal Monday hours on ‘British’ bank holidays, although May holiday dates sometimes differ and match shops across the country.

Home Bargains stores across the UK will also close early on Monday, May 4, but will tend to maintain normal opening hours across the country. People need to be able to shop as if it were a normal Monday, but they need to be aware that stores may close several hours earlier than the standard weekday schedule.
