A law school in Florida has reversed course and will allow a Landmark major in the U.S. following intervention by Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier after the school initially rejected the major.
“We are pleased that Barry Law is reversing course and giving his students the opportunity to hear ideas outside the left-wing echo chamber,” Uthmeier told Fox News Digital on Monday.
Voice of Florida reported On April 22, “Barry University School of Law reversed its earlier denial and will allow students to form a chapter at Turning Point USA, in compliance with Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier’s demands that the private Catholic institution engages in viewpoint discrimination.”

One 9 April letter“Denying students the ability to form a TPUSA chapter at Barry Law would likely violate students’ contractually ‘guaranteed’ freedom of speech and association. It discourages free discussion, inquiry, and expression, and prevents students from organizing and joining an association in support of their common interests,” Uthmeier wrote.
Uthmeier, who asked the law school to respond by May 15, continued: “Barry Law’s decision also violates the specific promise that the disqualification would not be based solely on affiliation with an extramural organization. The disqualification was specifically based on the student organization’s affiliation with TPUSA, and the law school disingenuously determined that it was contrary to the University’s purpose.”
He also noted that the law school in Miami Shores has a chapter of OUTLaw, an LGBTQ+ student organization found in many law schools in the United States.
“Barry University is a ‘Catholic institution’ grounded in the liberal arts tradition that ‘nurtures and values cultural, social, and intellectual diversity’—unless, apparently, a student is a devout conservative,” he wrote.

Uthmeier added: “Barry Law’s recognition of the LGBTQ organization OUTLaw undermines the Catholic Church’s clear position against transgenderism. Barry Law recognizes his own chapter of the ACLU that advocates for access to abortion – which contradicts Catholic teaching.”
“If these student organizations are not somehow at odds with the purpose of the Catholic university, then TPUSA certainly is not,” he continued. “The clearly disparate treatment confirms that Barry Law’s stated justification for banning the TPUSA chapter was merely an excuse to censor religiously conservative students.”
