Begonias are gardeners’ favorites because they are relatively inexpensive, easy to grow, and with the right care, they will reward you with lots of colorful blooms throughout the season.

Speaking to the Express from his colorful stand at the Grand Pavilion, he said giving them the right fertilizer regularly was key to keeping the plants blooming.

“You generally want a high-potassium food for flowers. Something like tomato food is the simplest way to do this,” he said.

“Once the plants are established in the pot or where they are growing, give them a regular high-potassium feed every two weeks.”

Potassium helps plants direct energy to producing flowers rather than leafy growth, making it ideal for begonias, which can bloom continuously for months when well nourished.

The good news is that flowering or bush begonias are not as fussy as other varieties and will grow in a wide variety of gardens.
