Ben Austin dies after being struck in the neck by ball
A young Melbourne cricket player who was seriously injured during training has died.
Ben Austin was seriously injured after suffering a blow to his neck while facing balls in the practice nets at the Wally Tew Reserve in Ferntree Gully on Tuesday afternoon.

“Ferntree Gully Cricket Club would like to offer advice regarding the tragic death of our player Ben Austin. We are absolutely devastated to hear of Ben’s passing and the effects of his death will be felt by everyone in our cricket community,” the club said in a statement on Thursday morning.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with his family, Jace, Tracey, Cooper and Zach, extended family, friends and everyone who knew Ben and the joy he brought.

Floral tributes were held at Ferntree Gully Cricket Club.
The club said Ben’s parents, Jace and Tracey, wanted to thank the emergency services and doctors who cared for him.
“We ask for your continued support during this time of grief,” the club said.
