Sir Sadiq has long been rumored to be running for a seat in the House of Lords and has reportedly worked closely with the incoming Prime Minister over the years.

But it is understood Sir Sadiq does not want a ministerial role in Mr Burnham’s new administration.

It is also believed that it has not yet been decided whether he will run again for the mayoral post, which he has held since 2016.

The Mayor of London, a long-time ally of Sir Keir, will combine his parliamentary role with his regional role, at least initially.

Sir Sadiq is among 16 new political appointments made by Sir Keir, who left Number 10 after a checkered two-year premiership.

Sir Chris Wormald, a career civil servant whom Sir Keir was accused of scapegoating after he was effectively sacked during the Mandelson investigation scandal, will sit as a cross-colleague alongside Sir Brian Leveson.

The Prime Minister is believed to have directly recommended the former cabinet secretary for a seat in the Lords.

Other candidates for the outgoing Labor leader include broadcaster and former Loose Women panellist June Sarpong and former Unison general secretary Christina McAnea.
