In this compression lies an advantage. There is danger in delay. For India, this is not an abstract theory. When Prime Minister Narendra Modi opened the AI Impact Summit in New Delhi this week, the message spread far beyond the conference hall. This wasn’t just a celebration of digital innovation. It was a statement of intent. India wants to have a decisive say in shaping the technologies that will define power in this century.
Beneath the speeches and demonstrations lies a more difficult question: Can India use these new smart systems to break away from decades of defense dependency and build a faster, smarter and more self-reliant military?

The race is already ongoing. Think of the airport.
China is fielding the J-20, a fifth-generation stealth fighter designed for networked warfare, not just dogfights. Beijing is already investing in sixth-generation aircraft concepts built around manned-unmanned teaming, in which a pilot commands multiple autonomous drones in combat. These planes are not just jets; They blow up data nodes.
Meanwhile, the United States is developing the Next Generation Air Domination (NGAD) platform, often described as a sixth-generation system and intended to operate alongside autonomous “loyal wingman” unmanned aerial vehicles. The emphasis is clear: integration, speed, survival.
In such a battlefield, air superiority will depend less on raw numbers and more on sensor fusion, data sharing, and machine-assisted targeting.
Even Russia is drawing lessons from its war in Ukraine, which has accelerated work on electronic warfare and automatic targeting. Conflict has become a harsh laboratory for real-time experiments. The middle powers took decisive action. Israel has demonstrated how advanced targeting and intelligence-correlation tools can magnify military influence.
Where does India stand in this race?
Drones, swarms and the changing economics of war
The war in Ukraine has revealed a brutal truth: Cheap drones can destroy expensive armor. Swarm tactics, consisting of hundreds of coordinated unmanned systems overwhelming air defenses, are reshaping the battlefield economy.
India has started investing in swarm drone programs through the Defense Research and Development Organization and the iDEX framework. But the scale and pace of deployment will determine whether these efforts remain experimental or become operational doctrine.
If China can deploy drone swarms along disputed borders and other powers can flood its maritime defenses with autonomous systems, India needs to prepare not only to deploy similar capabilities but also to defend against them.
India’s structural problem

Looser foreign investment rules have also encouraged partnerships with the private sector. The pieces are falling into place. The question is whether they can be installed quickly enough.
Robotic ground systems
Robotic quadruped systems, often referred to as “robo-dogs,” have been tested by Chinese and American forces for reconnaissance and urban operations. Armed robotic platforms and unmanned ground vehicles are also under development worldwide.
Beyond patrols and reconnaissance, global militaries are exploring robotic infantry support units, humanoid or semi-autonomous systems that could assist soldiers in combat, transport supplies or perform high-risk operations in enemy terrain. India can leverage similar technology to augment personnel in multi-front deployments.
These systems expand the scope of surveillance while reducing the risk to soldiers. They may patrol dangerous terrain, enter contested buildings, or serve as forward observers.
India’s armed forces can benefit from such systems, especially in high altitude and counter-insurgency environments. But integrating robotic units requires doctrinal clarity, education reform, and budget prioritization, not just procurement announcements.
Logistics: Secret decision maker
History shows that wars are won with supply lines as much as firepower. Napoleon’s famous saying is “Armies travel on their stomachs.” This fact also holds true in the digital age.
Data models can predict spare parts shortages, ammunition needs and maintenance failures before they disrupt operations. For India, where troops are deployed from the Himalayan heights to the shores of the Indian Ocean, predictive supply management can prevent costly downtime and reduce waste.
As India moves towards an integrated operational command, logistics and intelligence need to speak the same language. Intelligent systems can bridge services that traditionally operate in silos.
Doctrine in the machine age
Technology alone does not win wars. Strategy gives it meaning.
India’s doctrine has evolved since the Cold Start debates of the early 2000s, but has not fully addressed the moral and operational dilemmas of automatic warfare.
If a decision support system recommends a strike, who has legal responsibility? How should India react if an enemy’s automated systems activate faster than human commanders can react? What limits should be placed on the use of lethal autonomous weapons, especially given India’s commitment to strategic restraint?
These are not academic discussions. They are the battlefield realities that await.

Cyber and space battlefield
Modern warfare now extends far beyond land, sea and air.

India’s defense inventory is still weighed down by outdated platforms and extended procurement cycles. But the revolution in warfare is less about replacing every tank or plane and more about embedding intelligence into what already exists.
These upgrades, such as equipping aircraft with advanced threat assessment modules, equipping armored vehicles with computer vision systems, and deploying predictive maintenance tools across fleets, can extend operational life while increasing combat effectiveness.
Rather than replicating Cold War modernization timelines, India has the opportunity to squeeze capability development into a shorter window through focused technological infusion.
Ambition and Inertia
India has signaled its intention. A Defense AI Council was created. The Defense Artificial Intelligence Project Agency framework has been published. Funding for innovation increased. But corporate habits continue. Supply processes remain slow. Competition between services can stall integration. Risk aversion often outweighs experimentation.
The summit in New Delhi offered a rare opportunity to align India’s emerging civilian technology sector with defense needs. The talent pool is strong. Capital is growing. The strategic environment is pressing. There is an opportunity to leap forward, but it won’t last forever.
Countries that deploy smart systems in their armed forces today will shape the security order of the next twenty years. This is not optional for India, where borders are blurred and maritime ambitions exist. The code of modern conflict is being written in real time. Whether India will be a major author of this will depend on determination, not rhetoric.
