The Met Office has warned that it may snow next week, stating the areas where snowfall is most likely. The cold weather is expected to take hold over the coming days and will cause the mercury to drop across the country, making for a cold and frosty start to next weekend.

In its latest long-range forecast, running from Thursday 12 February to Sunday 8 March, the national forecaster predicts the UK will be under the influence of low pressure systems. When this wet low pressure system encounters cold air, it creates perfect conditions for snow to form. With significant cold weather expected late next week, white goods may be on the way.

For many in Wales or the south of England this low pressure is likely to mean more rain, while for those in the north and north-east regions snow could be on the way.

According to Met Office forecasts: “Mainly cyclonic patterns are expected to dominate the UK.

“Early in this period we could see colder conditions becoming more prevalent for a while, bringing the possibility of some snow, particularly in the north and northeast.

“However, this will offer a few days’ respite from the wet weather in the south. By the end of this period, the track of Atlantic depressions may shift slightly further north than in the last few weeks.

“This will keep the weather generally unstable, with more rain and perhaps strong winds at times. Many parts may become slightly milder given westerly influences, but there is still a chance of colder conditions lingering towards the northeast.”

Forecasters have warned that Britons will experience a significant drop in temperatures from Tuesday.

Much of the UK can be expected to be covered in rain as temperatures continue to fall, while snowfall may still be possible in northern areas.

Much of the UK will enter the negatives by Friday, with daytime highs expected to rise to around 5 degrees, meaning much of the snow may not settle.

Looking ahead to next week, some snowfall is possible again but likely to be exclusive to higher ground as wet weather prevails again.

The Met Office added: “Conditions across the UK are expected to change significantly during this period.

“Low pressure systems are likely to prevail, meaning showers or longer periods of rain, occasionally heavy rain, across much of the UK, with some chance of snow still remaining in the northern hills.”
