Bill Maher calls out Darializa Avila Chevalier over prison stance

Bill Maher attacked socialist Darializa Avila Chevalier, who is supported by New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani, on Friday after Chevalier won the Democratic primary for New York’s 13th Congressional District and her responses about prisons, deportations and past anti-American posts on social media came under scrutiny.
Maher opened “Real Time with Bill Maher” with a monologue about Avila Chevalier’s refusal to say directly to the New York Editorial Board whether a convicted murderer should be incarcerated. report.
“The New York Times asked him: ‘If someone randomly kills someone, should he go to prison?’ I couldn’t get him to say yes to that,” Maher said. “So, there’s a waking mind virus, and I think we’ve found patient number zero. Her name is Darializa Avila Chevalier.”

Avila Chevalier, 32, defeated Rep. Adriano Espaillat (DY), chairman of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus, in Tuesday’s primary election. Chevalier led with 49.4% to Espaillat’s 45.9%.
Maher also touched on past statements about the United States and the plan to kneel during the congressional oath.
“He’s also saying that the United States of America, the country he’s trying to be a part of, is occupied indigenous land and that this country, America, is a complete disgrace,” Maher said. “He will kneel during the oath of office.”

The New York Editorial Board repeatedly pressed Chevalier about how a murderer should be treated based on his abolitionist views. He said incarceration continues under the current system but did not directly confirm it.
“It’s tragic that the murder happened. It’s tragic that there was even a situation where it could happen, and all of this is a reflection of the systems that allowed this situation to happen,” Avila Chevalier said.
Chevalier also told the board that he opposes deportation under all circumstances.

“I do not accept deportation,” he said. “I think deportation is completely wrong because I think it’s an incredibly cruel punishment that’s meted out to people really just based on where they were born.”
