UConn coach Geno Auriemma confronted South Carolina’s Dawn Staley after the Huskies’ upset loss in last week’s Final Four.

Despite Auriemma’s apology, which did not name Staley, there is chatter about the heated argument that took place during last Sunday’s national championship game between UCLA and South Carolina.

Following the Bruins’ dominant championship game win over the Gamecocks, Staley praised UCLA coach Cori Close as a “really quality” person; It was a statement that contrasted sharply with his initial reaction to Auriemma following their on-field altercation.

Staley moved to defuse the situation, saying he spoke with Auriemma on Tuesday and praised her legacy in women’s basketball.

“I spoke with Geno and I want to be clear; I have great respect for him and what he means with this game. One moment does not define a career and does not change the impact it has had on the evolving women’s basketball. The standard at UConn is because of him and that is something this game benefits from.”

Staley also called for a shift in focus, encouraging fans and the broader basketball community to move forward.

“So I’m asking everyone to turn the page. Let’s refocus on what’s most important – let’s continue to elevate our game, create opportunities and move it forward.

“This has always been my mission and it doesn’t change.”

South Carolina beat UConn 62-48 in last Friday’s national semifinals. Auriemma approached Staley for a routine handshake after the game, but the moment became tense and the two had to separate.

Auriemma initially struck a defiant tone when asked about the trade, but later said his behavior was inexcusable.

“There can be no excuses for how I handled the endgame against South Carolina. It was different from what I did and different from our standards at Connecticut,” the Hall of Fame coach said in a statement. “I want to apologize to the staff and team at South Carolina. The way I reacted was inappropriate. The story should be about how well South Carolina played, and I don’t want my actions to overshadow that. I have a great relationship with the team and I want to sincerely apologize to them.”

Staley had previously said she did not speak to Auriemma after Sunday’s women’s national championship game. He led South Carolina to the national title in 2024 before falling to Auriemma in last year’s championship.
