BJD Protest Over Student’s Death Turns Violent; Tear Gas, Water Cannons Used

BHUBANESWAR: Several BJD workers and leaders, including two former ministers, were injured in a friction with police staff on Wednesday during his protest on the death of a university student on fire in the Balasore region of Odisha.

When a civil servant violated a barricade to walk towards Loyal Seva Bhavan, his workers and leaders of the state secretariat and clashed with the police staff, BJD’s demonstration turned to violence near the Alt PMG Square. Police said he used water balls and fired tear gas shells to disperse the agitation BJD workers.

“BJD workers were later arrested and taken from the agitation field.” He said. Among the wounded people were former ministers Pranab Prakash Das and Priti Ranjan Gharai. Gharai was initially taken to the Capital Hospital, and then Bhubaneswar moved to Bhubaneswar’s intensive care unit of Utkal Hospital.

He said Das was taken to a private hospital. The BJD organized the protest and demanded a judicial investigation into the death of a university student who set fire to the rejection of justice in the incident of sexual harassment.

Considering the BJD’s protest about the death of the university student in the Balasore region, the security was strengthened in Delight Seva Bhavan in Bhubabaneswar. Police said that security was bored in other government buildings in the city, including Rajiv Bhavan and Kharavela Bhavan near the State Secretariat.

Police commissioner giant Datt Singh was located near Del Seva Bhavan to control security arrangements. Authorities, previously, the identity of the employees after the full verification of the secretary was allowed to enter the secretary, he said. The entrance of the visitors was also restricted, but he added that people who have previously made an appointment were made on the advice of the relevant departments.
