BJP planning to manipulate electoral rolls, ‘delete names of 10,000 voters’: Assam MLA

Raijor Dal MLA Akhil Gogoi on Tuesday said that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is pursuing an agenda of manipulating voter rolls in most polling stations in Assam ahead of the polls.
In a social media post, he said he was aware of discussions among senior State BJP leaders about a plan to delete the names of 10,000 voters in at least 60 constituencies and add new names to these constituencies.
“State BJP chief Dilip Saikia held a video conference with party MPs and district presidents on January 4 to discuss preparations for the wall-writing campaign the next day. The discussion turned into manipulation of voter rolls during the ongoing special intensive revision to ensure the party’s victory in the upcoming Assembly elections,” he said.
Mr. Gogoi said MLAs and district presidents have been given time till January 12 to submit lists of voters who did not vote for the BJP so that their names can be deleted. He also said a senior minister had been given the task of “fixing” at least 60 seats in Parliament.
Challenging Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma to release the video recording of the January 4 meeting, the MLA said he was willing to undergo narco-analysis test to justify his claim.
Demanding a judicial inquiry into the matter, he said, “Let the government prove me wrong. If this is true, this is a serious conspiracy against the people of Assam and their right to vote.”
The BJP leadership did not respond to Mr. Gogoi’s claim.
The Prime Minister reacted to the Congress’ call to halt the special intensive revision (SIR) of electoral rolls due to “serious irregularities”. He said anyone with genuine concerns can go through existing procedures to raise an objection and make corrections.
“The opposition needs to stop swearing in the media and follow procedures,” he said.
Earlier, the Communist Party of India (Marxist) had alleged that officials in Western Assam’s Bajali district had given verbal instructions to “examine” the voter rolls to weed out names in at least 115 Muslim-majority polling stations.
According to the draft electoral rolls published in December 2025, Assam registered 2,52,01,624 voters, an increase of 1.35% compared to the last revision. During the SIR, 53,619 cases of multiple registration were detected, besides 4,78,992 dead voters and 5,23,680 shifted voters.
