It’s the middle of summer, so there isn’t a lot of NHL news to review, but there is, and in the case of the Chicago Blackhawks, it’s very bad.

This was because the team learned that the team’s main player, Connor Bedard, would be sidelined for four months after getting injured during practice.

This means he will not return to the team squad until November.

While Bedard was training in Vancouver last week, video began circulating of him falling during practice and leaving the ice in clear discomfort.

The discomfort was real, and on Wednesday the Blackhawks announced that the former first overall pick had surgery on his left shoulder and is expected to make a full recovery.

The only problem is that this will force him to miss some action early next season.

Now the Blackhawks will be happy to have him back for a month or so into the season as opposed to missing four months of the regular season, but that will make Chicago’s start to the season critical.

They play in a tough Intermediate League and probably have to keep up with the play-off teams; Teams like the Avalanche, starsWild, Mammoth and maybe the Jets — so they don’t have to dig a hole when Bedard moves on.

Bedard is no stranger to injuries. He suffered a right shoulder injury last season and suffered a broken jaw during his rookie season in 2024-25.

When healthy, he averaged just under a point per game, which is something the Blackhawks will need as they continue their push to become a perennial playoff contender.
