A beloved sandwich shop in the heart of a major UK city has confirmed it will soon close. The news comes after 11 bars and restaurants in the city have closed completely so far this year.
Soku Sarnie, in Newcastle’s Old Eldon Square, has told customers the popular lunch spot will close on Friday, March 6. The business has received a lot of attention on Instagram recently; foodies gravitated towards sandwich creations like Siracha Honey Philly Cheese, Thai Hot Honey Fried Chicken, Meatball Sub, and Caramelized Cauliflower Cheese. But the store will close this week, with owners confirming they are “pausing” their sandwich offerings for now.
As reported by Chronicle LiveThe owners added: “This decision came due to circumstances beyond our control, BUT this is not the end, just a temporary break.”
A number of Geordie residents reacted to the announcement, with one writing on social media: “Sad news indeed! But I’ll catch you before you go.” A second simply commented: “No.”
The closure of Soku Sarnie follows the closure of 11 restaurants in Newcastle so far this year. A number of other stores have also been forced to close in 2025, including Leila Lily’s, Earl of Pitt Street, Prohibition.
