Detective Chief Inspector Ruby Burrow, of Nottinghamshire Police, said: “This is an absolutely tragic incident and we continue to support family members at this extremely difficult time.

“We once again ask the media and the public to respect their privacy as they confront recent events.

“I would like to thank everyone who has shared our appeal to locate Brian since his disappearance, and our search teams for their professionalism and dedication over the last few days.

“In due course, an autopsy and official identification will be conducted and a file will be prepared for the coroner.”

In an earlier statement, the officers added: “We have also referred ourselves to the IOPC, which was a necessary step due to the officers’ previous contact with family members.”

Nottinghamshire Police added that they were not looking for anyone else in connection with a separate incident in which two men were struck by a car in Gainsborough Road, Winthrop, shortly after 10am on Saturday, November 22.
