Bollywood Dreams of South Divas Driven by Fame and Global Reach

Popular actress Keerthy Suresh, who won acclaim with Mahanati, is gearing up for the release of her new Hindi film Raftaar alongside Rajkummar Rao, which is scheduled to release in October. Although her previous Indian outing, Baby John, failed to make the expected impact, industry observers believe that Bollywood still remains an attractive destination for many South Indian actresses.
Writer-turned-producer Kona Venkat says there is nothing wrong with actresses aspiring to break into Hindi cinema. “Bollywood has always remained special for Telugu and Tamil actresses. Most South actresses cherish Bollywood dreams and there is nothing wrong with that,” she says.
While it draws attention to actresses such as Rashmika Mandanna, who expanded her presence with films such as Animal and Chhaava, Samantha received appreciation for projects such as Family Man 2 and Citadel: Honey Bunny. Raashi Khanna also became known for her Hindi projects like Farzi and Yodha.
Kona also points out that success in Bollywood is not guaranteed for everyone. Even though Sai Pallavi has established a strong foothold in Telugu cinema, she is still waiting for a big breakthrough in Hindi cinema. “Successes and failures are a part of an actor’s career. They need to be confident in their abilities and wait for the right opportunity. Sai Pallavi has a huge film like Ramayana, where she plays Goddess Sita, and it could be a huge blockbuster,” he adds.
Kona believes that the move into Hindi cinema also stems from the desire to expand market reach and connect with larger audiences. “Indian cinema still has wider visibility and reaches international markets, including European and African countries. Therefore, actresses are keen on expanding their fan base through Bollywood films,” she explains.
He also says Bollywood success also opens the door to lucrative endorsement opportunities. “Rashmika is already endorsing leading brands and earning huge amounts. Keerthy Suresh, Samantha and Sai Pallavi can also become big brand ambassadors and earn crores through endorsements. So Bollywood dreams are not just about films but also bigger commercial opportunities,” he says.
Kona Venkat also points out that inter-sector exchanges are stronger than ever. She believes that Hindi cinema has entered a real transitional phase, with Bollywood actresses like Deepika Padukone, Priyanka Chopra and Janhvi Kapoor taking up Telugu and Tamil projects.
“Language and regional barriers are gradually disappearing. Today, cinema is becoming a single identity,” he concludes.
