Cwmbran mum run over by own car while saving cat, inquest hears

During the investigation, it was learned that an animal lover died when his own car crashed as a result of the handbrake being applied on a hill while he was getting out of the vehicle to save a cat.

While on a hill on July 6, Jacqueline Davies, 75, got out of the driver’s seat of her red Ford Fiesta to carry the cat to safety, but her car rolled forward and fatally struck her.

Gwent Coroner’s Court heard Davies, of Hollybush in Cwmbran, Torfaen, was able to call 999 after the incident but died in hospital.

Davies’ family said in a statement that Davies “had a strength that inspired those around him” and that they were “desperate for answers”.

The inquest heard Davies was taken to the University Hospital of Wales in Cardiff with serious injuries and died the next day.

Coroner Rose Farmer said the provisional cause of death was a massive hemorrhage, injury to the inferior vena cava, the body’s largest vein, and trauma.

Her family said: “Words cannot express the pain of the sudden loss of our beloved mother.

“She was a strong, independent, brave mother who was never afraid to speak her mind, and that was one of the many things we loved about her.

“He was honest, determined and full of character, with a strength that inspired those around him.

“Our family is devastated and life will never be the same without him.

“We’re trying to come to terms with what happened, but we’re also desperate for answers.”

Gwent Police are appealing for anyone who was traveling in the Bryn Millwr, Hollybush area between 10am and 10.30am on July 6 and may have witnessed the crash to contact officers.

The investigation into Davies’ death will continue on April 13, 2027.
