Bondi shooting victim Reuven Morrison’s daughter Sheina Gutnick appears, full witness list revealed on day two
Jewish-Australian Natalie Levy became the first witness to testify at the royal commission today.
His mother immigrated from England to Australia and his father from Ukraine. Levy was born in Australia.
He said his parents grew up with racism in their country. “Growing up in Australia was great. It was safe,” he said. He said he “never” experienced antisemitism in his childhood.
“Anti-Semitism was an ancient concept,” he said.
He said he became aware of antisemitism as he got older. As an adult, he joined the voluntary Community Safety Group and during his time there became “much more conscious” of “anti-Semitic incidents happening globally and in Australia”.
Levy said Hamas’s attack on Israel on October 7, 2023 was “devastating.” The Opera House protest in Sydney on 9 October left him with a feeling of “utter disbelief”.
