White House border czar Tom Homan lashed out at a con man who called him a “racist” during a speech Thursday at an event hosted by Turning Point USA on the campus of the University of Texas at El Paso.

While Homan was discussing immigration enforcement operations, an event attendee yelled at him as a “racist” and a “traitor.”

Homan replied, “Call me whatever you want, I don’t care.”

“Why don’t you grow a spine, put a Kevlar vest and a gun on your hips, and secure this border?” he added.

Later, as Homan answered questions from the crowd, a man who appeared to be the earlier heckler suggested that Patrick Crusius, the gunman who opened fire at a Walmart in El Paso in 2019, was inspired by Homan and his comments supporting the Great Replacement Theory, a far-right belief that claims there is a conspiracy to replace white populations with non-white immigrants.

“Your everyday conservative, Patrick Crusius, drove hundreds of miles into our city based on your belief that Hispanics are replacing white people and that we need fear to deter Hispanics from coming to the country,” the protesters said, adding that “The Great Change has now become a mainstream conservative narrative.”

Protesters also claimed it was “fully integrated into mainstream media”.

“I honestly said open border was an act, it was a mess and that was by design,” Homan said.

Homan claimed that the Biden administration deliberately left the southern border unsecured to create a new and permanent bloc of Democratic voters, but admitted at a congressional hearing that he had no evidence to support that claim.

Crusius was sentenced to life in prison without parole earlier this year after pleading guilty to state charges related to the Walmart shooting that killed 23 people and injured 22 others. He also pleaded guilty in 2023 to 90 federal murder and hate crime charges and was sentenced to 90 consecutive life sentences.

The gunman left his grandparents’ home in Allen, Texas, and drove nearly 650 miles to El Paso to carry out the attack.

His manifesto included white nationalist and anti-immigrant themes. The manifesto cited the Great Change Theory as part of its inspiration for the shooting.
