Border czar Tom Homan says Catholic Church is ‘wrong’ on immigration

Border czar Tom Homan sharply criticized the Catholic Church on Friday, saying the church’s opposition to mass deportations undermines US laws and costs lives.

“The Catholic Church is wrong,” Homan said. “I’m sorry. I’m a lifelong Catholic. I’m not just saying this as a border czar — I’m going to say this as a Catholic, too. In my opinion, they need to spend time fixing the Catholic Church.”

Homan made the statement when asked at the White House this week about the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, which condemned President Donald Trump’s crackdown on immigration and warned of a “climate of fear and anxiety” over immigration enforcement. Reuters.

The bishops’ statement follows recent comments by Pope Leo, who called for “deep reflection” on how immigrants are treated under the Trump administration, whose administration has aggressively carried out mass deportations, according to Reuters.

Homan called on the Church to “correct itself” before criticizing U.S. immigration policy, accusing faith leaders of hypocrisy and noting that the Vatican imposes harsh penalties on trespassers on its own grounds.

“So, to them, the message we have to give to the whole world is: If you cross the border illegally, which is a crime, don’t worry,” Homan said. he said.

“If you are ordered deported by a federal judge at the end of the judicial process, don’t worry about us, because there should be no mass deportations. Is that the message you’re sending to the world?”

Homan said the Trump administration’s immigration policy “saved lives” and was more humane than the Biden administration’s approach.

He claimed that desperate immigrants often rely on violent cartels to get them across the border in dangerous conditions, that more than 4,000 immigrants have died during those journeys, and that thousands of Americans have died from fentanyl smuggled across the border.

“A secure border saves lives. I wish the Catholic Church understood this,” Homan said.

“Just as they have the right to secure their facilities, we also have the right to secure our borders. You cannot enter their facilities without being arrested. The penalties for entering their facilities are much harsher than ours.”

Homan added that the United States has the “most secure border in the history of this nation” due to strict enforcement under ICE.
