Boy, 3, left an orphan after entire family on way home from party | World | News
A young boy has been orphaned after being the sole survivor of a tragic car crash during the festive season. The head-on collision involving a suspected drunk driver occurred around 2 a.m. on December 20. In Texas, USA, the Contreras family was returning home from a Christmas celebration in Fort Bend when nearly all members of the family were killed, according to the local Sheriff’s Office.
While 27-year-old Lizabeth Rodriguez Contreras and 5-year-old Camila Peña were determined to have died at the scene, the 3-year-old child and his 26-year-old father Diego Peña were taken to the hospital by air ambulance. Unfortunately, the father was unable to make it, although the child was in stable but critical condition.
Majesti Faith Lee, 27, was arrested by police and charged with one count of intoxication manslaughter and one count of intoxication assault. The Harris County family reported that while they were heading north from Christmas celebrations, Lee was allegedly heading south on the northbound highway. Mirror USA.
Authorities have confirmed that alcohol is suspected to have played a role in the tragic crash that resulted in Lee being airlifted to hospital. According to the press release, Lee was treated for his injuries; but they were not life-threatening. Lee’s bail was set at $1,050,000.
Sheriff Eric Fagan of Fort Bend County said: “Our hearts go out to the family as they endure an unimaginable loss. This tragedy is a painful reminder of how quickly lives can change when impaired driving occurs and why making responsible choices behind the wheel is so critical.”
Lizbeth and Diego’s siblings started a GoFundMe campaign to support the orphaned child and assist the grieving family with medical expenses.
The page states: “Lizebeth and Diego’s world revolved around their children, as evidenced by the fact that their young family was inseparable.
“Diego remembers the moment when his life changed when he was about to become a father. He naturally embraced being a very involved father and took great pride in working overtime with Lizbeth to provide for their young family.”
The fundraising page also noted that Lizabeth previously taught at Metcalf Elementary School and loved being a mom to mini-me Camilla.
He added: “Camila had a smile that was so contagious it made it impossible to have a bad day with her.”
More than $90,000 of the $100,000 goal was raised.
