A four-year-old boy is fighting for his life after a horror pool incident at a hotel in southern Gran Canaria sparked a frantic emergency response.
The teenager was pulled from the water at the popular British holiday resort on Saturday afternoon, the Sun reported; Reports showed that he had suffered a serious drowning incident and was in critical condition.
Emergency crews took him to a nearby private medical center in San Bartolomé de Tirajana. However, as his condition worsened, doctors became alarmed and called specialist teams.
Paramedics from the Canary Islands Emergency Service (SUC) made the urgent decision to transport the child by plane at a time when every second counts.
In a dramatic operation, the rescue helicopter had to land in the parking lot of a nearby school, while a medical ambulance transported the child to the temporary landing area.
He then flew under the constant supervision of a team of experts, including a doctor and nurse, who worked to keep him stable during the flight.
The helicopter proceeded towards Las Palmas; where staff at the University Maternity and Children’s Hospital were put on high alert to meet the child in critical condition.
Officials confirmed that the child showed signs of severe drowning before emergency transport was performed.
Ambulance crews, air support and multiple emergency services, including hospital-based pediatricians, participated in the rescue effort.
It was learned that the child’s condition was serious.
