A dramatic rescue is underway after a teenage boy was swept away in turbulent waters north of Sydney.
Video of the incident shows rescuers scrambling down a high cliff to save the boy near Turimetta Beach Headland in Warriewood. He is expected to be taken to a safe place on a stretcher and by crane in a short time.
According to an emergency call, emergency services were called at 1.20pm after the child, who was found on rocks near the Warriewood blowhole, was pulled into the blowhole by a large wave. Flooded in the beach cave, rescuers lost sight of him for several terrifying minutes.
It was then dragged onto nearby rocks. While a paramedic from the ambulance helicopter was dropped next to the child, the child was found conscious and in stable condition. He is not believed to have suffered any serious injuries.
Fire and Rescue NSW said the boy was 18 years old. A spokesman said there was a “heavy rescue presence” through responses from Narrabeen, Dee Why and Eastwood stations. Water police also intervene; A rescuer is seen in the video swimming through the turbulent water towards a nearby jet ski.
The area is popular for cliff jumping and surfers who launch themselves from cliffs into the water.
More to come.
