A child who was run over by a train in Melbourne was taken to hospital.

Emergency services rushed to North Melbourne Station, where a child fell onto the tracks and was hit by a train at around 3.50pm on Monday.

It was learned that the child was trying to take his mobile phone.

A spokesman said crews found the trapped child within five minutes and worked quickly to rescue him.

“The patient was then treated by Ambulance Victoria and transported to hospital,” an FRV spokesperson said.

An Ambulance Victoria spokesman said the child was assessed and treated at the scene by intensive care and advanced life support paramedics.

“A child with serious lower body injuries was transported to the Royal Children’s Hospital by road ambulance,” a spokesman said.

Paramedic Alex Hemsley told the ABC they quickly transported the teenager under emergency conditions – lights and siren conditions – with advance notification of his injuries to the Royal Children’s Hospital.

“(Paramedics) did everything as quickly as they could and provided the highest level of care to this young man during potentially one of the most traumatic days of his life,” he said.

Train lines were closed while emergency services responded to the incident.
