Chicago’s mayor became a laughing stock after declaring a state of emergency over violence against transgender people during a deadly Juneteenth weekend in his city where dozens of people were shot and six were killed.
“Since declaring a Transfemicide State of Emergency, our administration has strengthened the City’s capacity to support LGBTQ+ Chicagoans,” he said Sunday. x post Mayor Brandon Johnson said. “This framework builds on that work by centering the voices and lived experiences of trans Chicagoans to chart a path to a safer, more connected city.”
“Transfemicide” is defined as “the targeted killing of a trans woman motivated by transphobic and misogynistic hatred.” Critics were quick to point out that Johnson appeared focused on promoting the fight against a vague category of transgender violence rather than the killings of black Chicagoans on Juneteenth weekend.

Johnson’s office reimposed the state of emergency on Sunday after it was first imposed in 2024.
A report on the issue suggests that violence against transgender women, particularly black, indigenous trans women of color (BIPOC), is common in Chicago.
However, the report does not mention how many trans women have been killed in the city and acknowledges that it includes suicides in the “transfemicide” category, despite the definition of the term. The picture at the top of the paper contains 21 people and their photographs; These are probably the trans women who died in Chicago.
Online critics chastised Johnson for focusing his administration’s energy on the transgender issue, with many noting that the timing of the post coincided with a weekend in which 39 people were shot and six killed while celebrating Juneteenth in the city.

President Donald Trump condemned Democratic Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker for Saturday’s violence and offered federal aid to quell the chaos.

“Too many murders in Chicago,” Trump wrote Real Social. “Why doesn’t Governor Pritzker call me for help? I can make Chicago a safe City in ONE MONTH, ONE YEAR, it will be one of the safest cities!!!”
He touted his success in slowing violent crime in Washington, D.C., by deploying National Guard troops and federal law enforcement.
Johnson’s office did not respond to a request for comment.
