Some images are engraved in our collective memory. Like the very happy photo Lissie Harper posted after marrying her childhood sweetheart, PC Andrew Harper, after he was killed in the line of duty.

She was so tiny when she reached out to kiss her new husband, who towered over her, wrapping his arms around her tightly.

We also don’t get to see the online video of Jessie Cole and Albert Bowers, two of her husband’s killers, laughing as the 17-year-old was taken down in 2020 after being sentenced to 13 years each for manslaughter.

The couple had been married for only four weeks. They hadn’t even had a chance to go on their honeymoon and they were about to go.

But four hours after his shift officially ended, PC Harper had responded to a call about a stolen quad bike in the middle of the night. While the two teenagers and the driver of the vehicle were fleeing the scene in Berkshire, he was dragged by a car and nearly died on a country road.

So when Lissie was informed that her husband’s horrific murderers would be released early under Labour’s ‘progressive’ prison policy, her cry of anger and pain was so primal it echoed across the country. We All I felt it.

He condemned the decision as ‘pathetic’ and accused politicians of ‘making decisions from behind the table that will have real and lasting consequences for the families of victims like mine’.

He added: ‘It took me years to rebuild a life that fell apart in a matter of minutes. ‘It will take years to pick up the pieces left behind by the actions of the men who stole our future.’

It’s small consolation to Lissie that the driver of the car, Henry Long, has been sentenced to a longer prison sentence and has so far been ineligible for early release.

The truth is that Labor was preparing to release his co-murderers before they had even served half their sentences, and would almost certainly have done so had he not spoken out.

Our newly unelected Prime Minister, Andy – as he prefers to be called – could put an end to the concept of early release once he comes to power.

Maybe he was too busy visiting homeless shelters, playing man in all seasons, drinking beer at a bar.

He only realized this when Lissie began to despise him and others like him.

She shamed him into making a major U-turn, and he announced he would put his early release plan on hold until it was reviewed. This meant that two of her husband’s killers would remain in prison for the time being.

How ironic that a young girl who once designed wedding cakes for a modest living will be the one to show our new Prime Minister what justice truly means.

Driven by a sense of loss and injustice, he successfully campaigned for years for Harper’s Bill, which would impose a mandatory life sentence on anyone who kills an emergency worker in the line of duty, which was passed four years ago and earned him an MBE in the process.

As Lissie devastatingly put it this week: ‘For the families of the victims, this has nothing to do with politics. It’s about whether a sentence means what the judge says it means. It’s about whether justice means something we truly believe in.’

He adds passionately: ‘Andrew deserves better. Every victim deserves better. And the British people deserve a justice system they can trust.’

His words reflected the anger of millions of Britons who felt let down by the system; not just Lissie but the countless victims of crime who are appalled that we allow rapists, sex offenders and cop killers to be released halfway through their sentences.

Lissie has spoken out since her husband’s brutal murder, describing Labour’s early release decision as ‘deplorable’ and branding Andrew’s killers ‘the men who stole our future’.

That’s right, our new man of the people has at least paused this early release plan after Lissie’s outburst. But this is not a review we need; The plan must be canceled without hesitation.

Unless Andy actually takes Lissie’s message to heart, the ‘hope’ he promised us on the steps of Downing Street this week will prove nothing.

Or in other words, if he does not listen to him, the Messiah from the North will be completely despairing.
