Brendan Banfield sentenced to life for killing wife to hide au pair affair

A Virginia man convicted of killing his wife and another man to hide his affair with the family’s Brazilian nanny will spend the rest of his days behind bars after being sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole on Friday.

Brendan Banfield, a former IRS law enforcement officer, was convicted earlier this year on two charges of aggravated murder; one count of using a firearm to commit a crime and endangering children stemming from the 2023 murders of Christine Banfield and Joseph Ryan at the family’s home in Herndon, Virginia.

The couple’s caretaker, Juliana Peres Magalhäes, pleaded guilty to manslaughter charges and was sentenced to 10 years in prison for her involvement in the conspiracy to cover up her and Banfield’s extramarital affair.

“The level of cruelty, calculation and inhumanity in this case reflects something much deeper than anger or impulse; it reflects evil,” Judge Penney Azcarate said in sentencing Banfield. he said. “Therefore, I bear no burden and have no hesitation in sentencing you to life imprisonment.”

Banfield addressed the court before sentencing and remained defiant while maintaining his innocence.

“I’m not trying to reduce it in any way [Christine’s] “That was life,” Banfield said. “She was truly a caring mother, a caring wife and a loving nurse. But I am not responsible. I am not responsible for her death. This is not a knife that I hold in my hand and I never stabbed her.”

The convicted murderer said he was “very disappointed in the legal system” and claimed that authorities “never truly investigated Joe Ryan.”

The court also heard from Christine Banfield and several of Ryan’s loved ones, including Christine’s sister Danielle, who spoke through tears at the podium.

“He could have divorced and moved on, but divorce would have required giving up control – and control was always the priority. His actions were not driven by love, but by lust for power, deceit, and complete disregard for the lives he was destroying.”

Ryan’s mother, Deirdre Fisher, also spoke directly to her son’s killer online.

“Joe wasn’t just a disposable caricature,” Fisher said. “He had a face, he had a name, he had a life. But Brendan Banfield shot his face, tarnished his name and treated his life as disposable.”

Throughout Banfield’s trial, prosecutors revealed that she and Magalhãoes orchestrated an elaborate plan to lure Ryan to the family’s home under the guise of a consensual rape fantasy after posing as Christine on a fetish website on February 24, 2023. Authorities said the scheme was carried out in an effort to make his wife’s death look like the home was attacked by an intruder.

During Banfield’s trial, Magalhäes testified that the two took the Banfields’ young child into the basement before entering the master bedroom, fatally shooting Ryan and stabbing Christine Banfield to death with a knife Ryan had brought.

According to the prosecution, Banfield framed the scene as a home invasion; Magalhäes then called 911, telling authorities that Ryan was an intruder who had stabbed his wife.

“Your actions were deliberate, self-serving and demonstrated a profound disrespect for human life,” the judge said Friday. he said. “So let’s be clear: You deserve nothing but incarceration and a life spent thinking about what you did to the victim and his family. Let this be heavy on your soul.”
