Brexit fact check: Did the UK ever really send £350m a week to the EU? | News

Ten years after the Brexit referendum, one of the campaign’s most memorable slogans is still under scrutiny: “We’re sending £350 million a week to the EU, let’s fund our NHS instead.”

According to Mark Dayan, Brexit Program Leader at the Nuffield Trust, “It was a very exaggerated way of counting contributions to the EU, which did not take into account some of the money we got back.”

So has Brexit given a financial boost to the NHS? Dayan argues: “What we saw in practice was that there was actually less money spent on healthcare, due to the economic impact of leaving the EU and the resulting lower taxes.”
