India’s leadership in the BRICS group will help boost the priorities of the Global South, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said on Tuesday, June 23, 2026. Meeting the National Security Advisers of BRICS member countries in New Delhi, Mr Modi said the group could play a vital role in combating terrorism, cyber security and other common challenges.
Meeting with NSAs of BRICS member states, Mr. Modi said, “In a challenging global environment, BRICS has a vital role to play in deepening security cooperation and addressing common challenges, from terrorism to cybersecurity and emerging technologies. India’s presidency will seek to advance practical cooperation, support the priorities of the Global South and contribute to a safer, more secure and inclusive world.”
Member states held a two-day meeting here starting June 22, where delegates discussed energy and food security, supply chain disruption, new technologies used by terrorist networks, cybersecurity and climate-induced instability.
In its statement, MEA stated that the delegations gave “full support” to India’s BRICS presidency in 2026 under the theme of “Resilience, Innovation, Cooperation and Building for Sustainability”. On the sidelines of the meeting, Mr. Doval met with his counterpart, Russian Federation Security Council Secretary Sergei Shoigu, on Tuesday and reviewed bilateral projects currently underway.

Iran’s complaint
The meeting also witnessed tense moments, with UAE and Iranian delegates clashing with Iranian delegation leader Ghadir Nezamipour over the war in the Gulf, saying “The attacks were carried out from bases located on the territory of the United Arab Emirates.”
“We hope that the United Arab Emirates will respect the principles of good neighborliness and choose the path of peace, stability and regional cooperation,” Mr. Nezamipour said.
