According to Sussex Police, around 4,000 counter-protesters are believed to be part of the Carnival Against Fascism demonstration.

The force says the anti-immigration protest was much smaller, with about 300 people participating.

In a statement, Sussex Police said: “The Stop the Boats protest, estimated at 300 in number, continues to advance south of the railway station towards Madeira Drive.

“The Carnival Against Fascism, a counter-action with an estimated 4 thousand people, continues in the region.

“We are present in both groups and continue to facilitate people’s movement, freedom of expression and assembly.”
