British Grand Prix result: Charles Leclerc wins dramatic race from George Russell and Lewis Hamilton

As Charles Leclerc took Ferrari’s second win in three races in the dramatic British Grand Prix, chaos broke out in the closing stages.
Leclerc, who claimed his first victory in nearly two years, took home Mercedes’ George Russell and Ferrari’s Lewis Hamilton as the race finished confusingly under a safety car after race control had a late change of heart.
Silverstone has seen many remarkable races throughout its long history, but this was one of the most extraordinary.
First, championship leader Kimi Antonelli suffered some sort of suspension issue as he approached Ferrari for the lead and looked set for another win.
Antonelli crashed onto the field amid desperate messages over the radio, while Red Bull driver Max Verstappen crashed into Stowe while moving Hamilton to second.
While the safety car promoted Russell to second on that occasion, Mercedes decided not to pit the Briton while everyone else was getting new tyres.
Antonelli crossed the line in ninth but dropped to 16th after receiving a five-second penalty for exceeding track limits while struggling with problems with his car.
Adding to the drama, Hamilton is expected to be investigated for a yellow flag violation after the race.
The result had a huge impact on the championship, reducing Antonelli’s points lead over Russell to 25 points. Hamilton remains seven points behind pending an investigation.
The highlights of an eventful race were:
-
A superb drive from Leclerc deservedly ended the Monegasque’s long win drought
-
Mercedes’ contrasting chances change the face of the title fight
-
A rare mistake by Verstappen as he took an unexpected second place for Red Bull
