Spears pleaded. He was found guilty of a lesser charge through his lawyer in MayIt allowed him to avoid prison time after California prosecutors charged him with driving under the influence of alcohol and drugs.
The 44-year-old pop star’s attorney, Michael A. Goldstein, entered the guilty plea on her behalf to what is commonly referred to as “wet recklessness.” That allowed him to be sentenced to one day in jail, a year of probation, mandatory drunken driving lessons and state-mandated fines that the judge said he had already served during booking.
“I don’t think anyone was happy to plead guilty, but under the circumstances, putting this incident behind me, I think everyone was happy with the outcome,” Goldstein said after the hearing. “We appreciate the district attorney’s recognition of the positive steps Britney has taken to help herself.”
During the brief hearing, Spears received summary probation, which was informal and did not require mandatory meetings with a parole officer. If he is pulled over, he temporarily surrenders his Fourth Amendment rights to search and seizure, meaning he must automatically submit to searches and sobriety tests. At Goldstein’s request, the judge ruled that this would not apply to his home.
Spears has a history of mental health and substance abuse issues and recently completed a stint at a rehab facility.
Goldstein said Spears returned home after completing rehab and that reports that she left early were “absolutely false.” When asked what’s next for him, he replied: “I don’t know, I’m pretty sure.”
Authorities stated in the criminal complaint that Spears had alcohol and drugs in her system, but they did not specify which drug or indicate the amount of alcohol in her blood.
