Government pulls amendment to Hillsborough law after backlash | Hillsborough disaster

The government has withdrawn an amendment to the proposed Hillsborough law due to concerns from campaigners and MPs that it is being watered down.

The public duty (accountability) bill aims to force public officials and contractors to tell the truth after disasters.

Changes proposed by the government on Wednesday brought spies within the purview of the law, subject to approval by the service chief, but campaigners argued this would allow those running security services to decide whether to disclose information.

It is understood the government decided not to delay the amendment on Monday, but instead to work with campaigners and mourners to bring it forward when the amendments reach the Lords.
