Mysterious gas leak causes panic in Jammu; probe launched to identify nature of substance

A mysterious gas leak from a cylinder at a scrap dealer’s shop triggered panic in an area near Jammu airport on Saturday, February 7, 2026, prompting authorities to rush joint teams of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) to the spot, officials said.
They added that some residents of Rani Bagh complained of shortness of breath after sudden gas leakage from an abandoned cylinder located on the scrap dealer’s premises.
According to officials, NDRF and SDRF teams wearing protective gear along with police, fire brigade and emergency services personnel reached the spot and successfully contained the leak.
They said the situation was under control and there was no need to panic.
Authorities stated that an investigation has been launched to determine the nature of the gas and how the cylinder reached the scrap dealer, and that the substance will be detected through scientific analysis and the necessary measures will be taken accordingly.
However, officials did not rule out the possibility that the gas could contain a dangerous chemical, including sulfur mustard.
